Professor Gita Gopinath Has Two New Appointments: AER and NBER
Professor Gopinath is now a Co-editor at the American Economic Review and Co-Director of the International Macroeconomics and Finance Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research.
She joins the American Economic Review editorial board along with her colleagues: Esther Duflo (MIT), as Editor-in-Chief, Stefano DellaVigna (University of California, Berkeley), as Coeditor, Thomas Lemieux (University of British Columbia), as Coeditor, and Liran Einav (Stanford University), as Coeditor.
At the National Bureau of Economic Research, she joins colleague Prof. Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas (University of California, Berkeley) as a Co-Director of the International Finance and Macroeconomics Program.

Oliver Hart named a Great Immigrant by Carnegie Corporation of New York
The Carnegie Corporation today announced the 38 individuals who will be honored on the Fourth of July when the Corporation conducts its annual salute to the invaluable role that immigrants play in helping to advance American society, culture, and economy. Among the honorees is Prof. Oliver Hart, co-recipient of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Economics.According to Carnegie Corporation president Vartan Gregorian, “Our annual tribute to Great Immigrants demonstrates the richness of talent, skills, and achievements that immigrants from around the world bring to every sphere of American society.”
Congratulations to Professor Amartya Sen on His Award of the the 2017 Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science!
The Johan Skytte Prize, awarded by Uppsala University in Sweden, is often considered an equivalent in Political Science of the Nobel Prizes.
Professor Sen will attend the traditional Prize Award Ceremony in Uppsala on September 30, 2017.
Professor Sen receives the prize for his many-sided scholarship “combining insights on the vulnerabilities of humankind with knowledge on the unique capacities of democratic political power to mitigate and diminish this exposure”....
In 1622, Johan Skytte, then Vice-Chancellor of the University, established the Johan Skytte chair in Eloquence and Government, which is probably the world’s oldest active professorship in political science. The lands included in the original donation continue to finance research and the Johan Skytte Prize. The prize sum of SEK 500,000 is awarded each year by The Skytte Foundation at Uppsala University to the person who has made the “most valuable contribution to political science”.
Royal Statistical Society Awards Professor Neil Shephard the 2017 Guy Medal in Silver
The Guy Medal is given to Prof. Shephard for a seminal paper written with his co-author Ole Eiler Barndorff-Nielson.
The Royal Statistical Society announcement is:
“The 2017 Guy Medal in Silver is awarded to Neil Shephard for his seminal paper "Non-Gaussian Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-based models and some of their uses in financial economics" written jointly with Ole Eiler Barndorff-Nielsen, and read to the Society in 2001, exemplifying his highly influential contributions across Statistics, Econometrics and Finance, including particle filtering, stochastic volatility models and the statistical analysis of high-frequency data.”
University of Warsaw Awards Honorary Doctorate to Professor Elhanan Helpman
The ceremony will take place in Warsaw on June 8, 2016.

"Prof. Elhanan Helpman is one of the world's greatest and most cited economists. His publications have transformed our understanding of the causes and effects of international trade, trade policy, the activities of multinational enterprises, as well as growth in open economies. Professor Helpman is one of the founders of the new theory of international trade, political economy of trade policy and endogenous growth theory, which emphasize the importance of economies of scale and the importance of imperfect competition."
Elhanan Helpman is the Galen L. Stone Professor of International Trade at Harvard University and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. He holds a B.A. degree in Economics and Statistics form Tel Aviv University, an M.A. degree in Economics from the same institution, and a Ph.D. degree in Economics from Harvard University.
